At the proposal of the Romanian State, the Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains were included on the World Heritage List in 1999.
Built in the murus dacicus technique, the six fortresses, belonging to the Dacian Complex that was included in the UNESCO heritage, were constructed between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD.
In 2012, started the Multiannual Archaeological Research Program for the Orăștie Mountains, coordinated by the National Museum of Transylvanian History and financed by the Romanian Ministry of Culture. This program aims to investigate, study and render public the research results for the above mentioned area.
